When a dental emergency happens, time is of the essence. We will do our best to fit you in whenever we can, as soon as possible, so that you don't have to wait. Our phones are monitored 24/7. If you need immediate care while our office is closed, we will help you find an emergency dental service provider. Day or night, we will make sure that you get the care you need when you need it.
In an emergency, you need the right treatment and you need it immediately. At Newman Family Dentistry, we are experienced with many treatments that may be needed urgently, such as root canals, tooth extractions, the placement of crowns and bridges, veneers, dental bonding, and many more. We cover a range of specialties, and if there is any service we can't provide, we'll help you find someone who can.
The best way to get through an emergency dental situation is to know what to do ahead of time. Keep our contact information in an easily accessible place, and familiarize yourself with the route to our office. Learn what constitutes a dental emergency, and don't put off treatment for urgent problems. When an emergency occurs, call us as quickly as possible, describe your problem, and be ready to come into our office.
For toothache, swelling, and signs of infection: Any sudden or severe tooth pain is cause for concern, as is fever or swelling of the face. You should seek immediate treatment, even if the tooth stops hurting -- this can be a sign of nerve damage and does not mean the problem has gone away. Infection in the mouth can spread to the rest of the body and cause major health problems. If you aren't sure whether your toothache needs urgent care, don't hesitate to call.
For a broken crown or other dental prosthetic: While in some cases this is merely a cosmetic issue, it is best to have it checked as soon as possible, especially if there is any pain or if the inner parts of the tooth are exposed. Call our office to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. In the meantime, make sure to keep the area clean and free of trapped food particulates, which may more easily become lodged in a crack or a jagged break.
For a lost tooth: Immediate attention is vital, as the tooth has the best chance of being saved within the first half hour after it is lost. Call our office as quickly as you can. Try to reinsert the tooth if you can, or if that is impossible, place the tooth in cold whole milk. Do not place the tooth in water. Bring the tooth with you to our office or to the emergency provider we refer you to. If the tooth cannot be saved, we can still provide you with a dental implant, which should be installed as soon as is feasible to prevent further damage to the surrounding area.
We hope you will never experience a serious dental emergency. But if you do, we are ready and waiting to help you get through it with your smile intact.
